It is very common these days that people outcast the ones who advocate cloth diapers. That is due to lack of awareness about the harmful effects of the plastic diaper.

These days generally plastic diapers have taken over the cloth diapers but many parents still feel the need to have an alternative to plastic ones.Nowadays there is a plethora of choice when it comes to cloth diapers. These cloth diapers are non-allergic, eco-friendly and don't hinder a baby's movements.

Cloth diapers also can be made at home with almost any fabric that has a good absorbing capacity and is suitable for you love bug. You can change the kind of fabric if the baby has any allergy to the fabric.

Never use synthetic fabrics like rayon, acrylic, nylon or polyesters as they have a tendency of building up friction when rubbed against your baby’s skin. It leads to rashes and also might lead to skin ruptures or boils. They also have a lower capacity of absorbing than cotton.

Cotton is an ideal choice. You can even use diapers made of your old clothes as they have a smooth surface after being used. Cotton has rarely any accounts of being allergic to the wearer. Also cotton fibers have a high capacity to absorb. Its soft to your babies organs and keeps the skin cool.

Cloth diapers are also available in the market in different attractive colors and design and fabric kinds. You can buy a pack and it stays for the next entire year!! This is major benefit of cloth diaper over fancier plastic ones.

On the other hand, the good plastic diapers are very expensive. Cheaper plastic diapers are of low quality and don't server the intended purpose.

How to tie a cloth diaper?

There maybe a bazillion videos showing different methods of tying a cloth diaper but the easiest are triangle nappy fold.

It’s strongly recommended to never ever use a casual safety pin it can create disastrous problems. Always buy the special diaper pins. And why even that?

Here is an alternative that would make the procedure simpler and safe.

When you get a diaper pack do this simple thing for all of them. Fold the diaper in a triangular half and cut a tiny slit towards the tip of the shorter end. Now for tying simply place it under the baby with the longer edges on the side and take the corner tip of one from the slit followed by the next and simply tie it under the third corner.

Cloth diapers of pure cotton fabric are also available in the market with a loop tailored to make them easy to tie.

Benefits of Cloth Diapers

  1. Cloth diapers are completely safe. There is a controversy surrounding the gel crystals in the diapers available in the market. Sometimes the crystals stick to the baby’s bum and tinge in blue. The claims made are that they are safe for the skin and are merely sodium polyacrylayte. But they may get in the body and in the end are chemicals. Any chemical can be a potent allergen to your baby. Also for the neonates they can pierce the skin as the epithelium is too delicate for even showing the veins in.
  2. Cloth diapers avoid infections or any irritation for the baby. There have been cases when the baby was kept tied in the plastic diapers as the parents did not realize it was already overused and it led to urinary tract infection. The pathogen find it a very nourishing environment with the moistness and nutrients available in urine and poop. The Trypanosomas and Chlamydies may lead to worsening the situation.
  3. Cloth diapers are flexible. There have been studies about babies developing bow shaped legs in the latter stage of life due to usage of tight plastic diapers. Theses diapers are thick. The baby’s bones and muscle are yet to develop to be enough to push the diaper into the limited region. The diaper doesn’t even fold a little and hence legs tend to twist. A baby may even face problem in lying down straight which may affect the development of the backbone.
  4. Cloth diapers don’t interfere with the babies daily routine habits. The baby has only few ways to get the physical activity done for food digestion. These are kicking the legs and a bit of hand movements. Most babies after having their food tend to play for a while with rapid leg kicking movements. They might even ride a cycle in air, hehe!! But if tied in a plastic diaper even this is hampered leading to improper digestion.
  5. Cloth diapers are easy to monitor and check on the baby’s pooping habits. It is difficult to understand whether the baby has pooped or not from a plastic diaper as it soaks it. The diaper maybe used many times before you come to realize that it has become a house of bacteria or germs. Also if the child poops, apart from the odor you don’t get a hint and your baby will surely be whining due to the rashes that would develop soon.
  6. Cloth diapers can never be tight as the fabric is very compressible. The gel filled thick pad plastic diapers get tight if they were tied and the baby was fed and the tummy filled up. Because babies have irregular peristalsis (rhythmic movement of food along gut) they tend to have a lot of borborygmus (air filling up in the gut). If the plastic diaper is tight even the movement of air is restricted and the baby might have stomach aches. This is another benefit of a cloth diaper as it doesn't restrict a baby's tummy.
  7. Cloth diapers promotes an active baby. A cloth diaper doesn't restrict a baby's movements. On the other hand, by reducing the movement of the baby the baby may become a little lazy and dull. A plastic diaper wearing baby may take more time to turn on his stomach due to the fact that the diaper won't let the baby lie on his back straight. This may delay development of crawling in a baby. This is not the case in cloth diapers.
  8. Cloth diapers are safe when reused. Cloth diapers can be washed carefully and then reused safely without posing any problem to the baby.
  9. Cloth diapers allow air circulation. When your baby is wrapped in a cloth diaper, air circulates well to the baby and out. Sometimes you need to put on the diaper soon after bathing your baby. In such a case the baby’s body gets to dry up in a cloth diaper. Whereas in a plastic diaper the baby might develop fungal infections due to the moisture left. The plastic is impervious to the inner moisture coming out.
  10. Cloth diapers are ideal if your baby is suffering from diarrhea. Its very common till the baby develops a strong gut to get these diarrhoeal phases. Every time a new food is introduced to the baby, the stomach takes time to accustom to it. While a plastic diaper wont let you become aware of the watery poop, the cloth diaper would show it. And its very easy to change as many times as needed. While a plastic gel diaper no matter how less the poop is, should be changed and that would be really costly.
  11. Cloth diapers help in setting the nature’s call cycle. It is the wetting of the body that makes the baby develop the habit of telling you about answering the nature’s call. Children who wear cloth diapers tend to stop peeing on bed at night well within 3 years of age. While the other babies don't get used to the stimuli and hence take longer times to learn to control the bladder.
  12. Cloth diapers stay in place better. Babies are naughty ones They can remove the adhesion tape of the diaper unintentionally. Also some plastic diapers have a poor adhesive. Cloth diapers are difficult to get out of their place if tied down nicely.
  13. Cloth diapers are eco friendly. The dumping grounds and drainage actually clog due to diapers and other sanitary waste. Adding so much of plastic in the environment doesn't make you a responsible citizen. Cloth diapers made of old clothes is actually a recycling method.
  14. Cloth diapers are economical. If you're a frugal parent who doesn't want to spend a bomb on diapers then cloth diapers are the best alternatives to plastic ones.

Disadvantages of Cloth Diapers

  1. Cloth diapers need a little practice on the parent’s side on how to tie them. Yes you need to learn it. But parenting is all about learning!! As also never ever pin a diaper. Nor tie big knots they can hurt the baby.
  2. Cloth diapers require vigilance. As they don’t lock the moisture you need to be careful while picking up your baby and having them in your laps. Especially when those guests come. But they make the vigilance easier as well to detect the poop from a distance without having to peep in the diaper every time.
  3. Cloth diapers during winter nights might keep your baby cold. As those popular commercials show the doctor blaming the diaper for baby suffering pneumonia. While it is true, vigilant parents can prevent this from happening. Parents should observe how many times a baby excretes. Every baby has a cycle/schedule. Parents have to just notice those and change diapers accordingly.
  4. Cloth diapers need a laundry service. Yes, you will have an extra round of the laundry. But it is no special laundry. You can just wash them in lukewarm water with a good detergent.
