Medela Swing Single Electric Breast Pump Review
Today, we have a Medela Swing Electric Breast Pump Review. Medela Swing Single Electric Breast Pump is a bestseller from Medela. This pump is for moms who want to complement their breastfeeding and not exactly for exclusive pumping moms since it's a single breast pump. A single breast pump can only pump a single breast at a time, hence it's more time consuming and less efficient then double electric breast pumps like Medela PISA.
Medela Swing Breast Pump is powered by battery which makes me tension free about pumping even if I am not at home. It is equipped with a 2-Phase Expression Technology which resembles a baby's nursing rhythm.
The complete package of the pump contains breast shields, bottles, connector valves and a battery pack.
The Medela Swing Breast Pump kit contains the following: Motor unit, PersonalFit 24mm (medium) breastshield, Breastshield connector (pump body), Valve, Membranes, Tubing, 5oz (150mL) breastmilk bottles, Bottle lids, Bottle stand, Shoulder/neck strap, AC adapter, Drawstring bag, Breastfeeding information Guide, Instructions for use.
When it comes to my baby’s health, I cannot compromise with something which will harm her.
The assurance that all parts that come into contact with breast milk are made without BPA, makes the mother in me proud of my decision to choose something which is safe for both for my baby as well me.
Now, let's get down with the complete Medela Swing Electric Breast Pump Review.
1. Ease of Use: Medela Pumps are very easy to use and intuitive. Medela Swing is also no different. I could assemble and dissemble it very quickly without even reading the instructions.
The buttons on the pump are easy to operate and have self-explanatory icons of on/off, increase & decrease suction and let down.
You can read the instruction manual and start off with pumping without much hassle.
2. Efficiency: Medela understands mothers and what they expect from the pump.
Medela Swing has a 2-Phase Expression Technology which mimics a baby's sucking rhythm.
After intensive research it has been found out that babies breastfeed in two distinct phases.
One is the stimulation phase where babies first go to breast, they suck faster to start milk flowing. Another is the expression phase where after milk flow or “let-down” starts, babies breastfeed with a slower suck to remove milk.
In my review, I found that Swing has a decent suction power (250mmHG) and performed quite well for a single electric breast pump.
3. Portability: If I have to list down the benefits of Medela Swing Breast Pump then definitely I would begin with the fact that it is compact with a lightweight motor therefore making sure that I don’t step out of the house without it.
As it fits easily into my purse or tote bag, I don’t have to worry about my day-long schedule as I know I can pump whenever I want.
I am an organised person and as the Medela Swing Breast Pump comes with a drawstring bag, it keeps me organized between the pump sessions.
The convenient AC adaptor along with battery power options facilitate mobility as I don’t have to worry about running out of power while pumping.
4. Comfort: Medela Swing Breast Pump is a single pumping kit with 24 mm PersonalFit™ breastshield.
This makes pumping efficient and comfortable. Raising a baby isn’t an easy task and with such pumps it does make the entire process a little less hectic.
Medela as a brand understands the fact that every woman is different hence they should be able to choose their most comfortable pump setting.
With the easy-to-use vacuum controls, I am assured of the most comfortable pump setting.
5. Hygiene: The use of a breast pumps brings in mind how well can it be cleaned so that the chances of infections are reduced.
When I bought it for the first time, before use I cleaned and sanitised the breastshields, breastshield connectors, white membranes, yellow valves, breastmilk bottles and lids.
Make sure you take apart and wash all parts that come in contact with your breast and breast milk. This should be done immediately after use as it prevents drying up of milk residues which may result into growth of bacteria.
I use only drinking quality-tap or bottled water for cleaning and never store wet or damp parts as they increases the chances of mould growth.
To clean the breast pump kit, I separate breastshields from breastshield connectors. Then twist and pull the yellow valves off of the breastshield connectors.
I make sure to remove the white membranes from the yellow valves. I rinse all separated parts that came in contact with my breast and breastmilk in cool water to remove any residue.
Medela Swing Breast Pump can be also washed in a sink without any hassle. Just soak all separated parts in warm soapy water for 5 minutes.
Take a clean dish-cloth or soft brush to clean and rinse all separated parts with clear water.
Keep in mind that every part should be dried completely in a clean area.
If you are using a dishwasher to clean your pump, then wash all separated parts of the kit on top rack of dishwasher.
No matter how you wash it, ensure that it is dried properly before next use.
I avoid using wet pump under any circumstances because it will harm my baby’s health.
I simply start with filling a pot with enough water to cover all parts. Once the water comes to boil, I place all the parts in it for 10 minutes. I remove the parts with tongs only after the water has cooled.
To dry the parts, I place the parts on a clean surface or a towel. This is how I do it but you can follow the instructions written on the Medela’s Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bag.
6. Sound: Medela Swing is quite silent. Like every electric pump it has a motor so it can't be completely noise free but it's not noisy enough to disturb a baby's sleep or distract your colleagues.
7. Accessories & Spare parts: There is a whole ecosystem developed around Medela products. You won't be ever short of quality and affordable spares and replacement parts.
9. Price: The Medela Swing Breast Pump is aptly priced at around $150-$200, hence one doesn’t even need to think twice before making a purchase.
When there’s a baby in the house, Medela Swing Breast Pump is a must. It has made lives of countless mothers not just easy but also very comfortable as they don’t have to worry about feeding their baby. They can easily concentrate on their work and make plans to stay out of home for long.
I am not an exclusive pumper but so for the odd occasion I have needed to express breast milk , Swing has been great. It pumps a lot quicker than a manual one and is simple to assemble and use.
Comfortable, adjustable, compact and very easy to put together. The product is designed with Mum's in mind and Medela have really thought about what is needed. Worth every PENNY!
Made my life just a tad easier. I love breastfeeding my baby but with Medela Swing it got more pleasurable and rewarding!
Good enough for a occasional pumping mother. It's ok to use if you've to pump 1-2 times a day and you're dead tired of a manual pump.
So comfortable even though the small thing packs quite a punch. Love Swing!

Hi, I am Marissa. I am a wife of a very supportive husband and mother 3 precious kids. Even though my life is not picture perfect, I have too many blessings to be counted. I am an ordinary mom who has been through some tough times.
I have tried to collate the best information available and write personal & real reviews for the benefits of parents who are confused with the plethora of breast pumps available. I have made an effort to steer clear of technical jargons and used layman language which is understood by people like us.
