Medela Pump In Style Advanced Review
Pump In Style Advanced with Backpack is a daily use double electric breast pump with 2-Phase Expression® technology. This series of breast pumps come in 3 variations - Tote, Backpack and Metro bag. It has a single knob speed/vacuum adjustments for comfortable pump settings. It has a removable cooler bag with ice pack which can hold 4 breast milk bottles.
All parts that touch breast milk are BPA FREE. The pump weighs in at 7.1 pounds and dimensions are 12 x 8 x 12 inches
Medela Pump In Style Breast Pump Backpack is one of the styles in the Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump series. The other 2 being Pump In Style Advanced - On-the-go Tote Solution Set and Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump with Metro Bag.
I have used Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump Backpack extensively. Here are my thoughts on all of the aspects.
1. Ease of Use: One of the reasons behind Medela Pump In Style Advanced success with moms is that it’s very easy to use.
In my Medela Pump In Style Advanced review, I found its operation easy to use. I was able to figure it out the attachments and how to use it in half an hour with the help of my husband. I am sure that most parents would be able to get the pump working without too much fuss with the help of useful manual and a plethora of videos available on youtube.
The pump whether in the backpack, tote or the metro bag version, is directly attached inside the bag. Metro version has a removable pump which some people may prefer.
In the other 2 versions, the pump is secured using Velcro which can be unfastened.
Whenever you need to use it just unzip the small compartment which reveals the front of the pump. It can be plugged in or run on 8 AA batteries.
While running on rechargeable AA batteries (not included), I had to charge it every 8th-10th milk pumping session which I think is quite good. It may though vary from person to person but it does give you an idea of how much to expect.
Though, the operation is not hands free, you can use pumping bra to make it a one. I will strongly suggest getting a pumping bra to make your life easier. Read Simple Wishes Hands Free Breastpump Bra Review
This Pump is certainly the easiest double electric breast pump I have used (I have used 3 till now).
2. Efficiency: Medela is a world leader in breast pumping equipment and it certainly did not disappoint me this time too.
It has a 2 phase expression technology which mimics how milk flows when a mother breastfeeds a baby directly. In the first phase, Stimulation, the pump works faster but lighter to stimulate milk flow.
In the second phase known as Expression phase, the let-down starts which results in majority of milk been expressed.
The pump works slower but suction is harder in this phase. Moms can control the time duration of these phases.I found this to be a huge improvement, as I was able to pump more milk consistently over a period of six months for my second born.
I have used or reviewed almost all breast pumps and till date I haven't found any double electric breast pump which matches PISA in terms of efficiency. Only hospital grade pumps which are pricier were better in efficiency.
3. Portability: I chose Medela In Style Advanced Breast Pump only because it was the most portable option without compromising on efficiency, price or ease of use.
I have a Medela In Style Advanced Breast Pump backback variant which I just love. At all times, my hands are free while I can work around the house.
Tote and Metro variants are also quite handy and few of my friends prefer them since it goes with their look and style.
The pump is so portable that you have to unzip the pump compartment, attach the tubing to the breast flanges and start the pump. I found it supercool when I had to pump while at work.
There was no headache of getting the pump out of the bag, fixing the attachments and all that stuff.
With ice pack cooler bag mom can store their pumped breast milk for 12 hours. So while in office, if you feel the breasts are full and you need to pump milk, you can pump and store the milk without the fear of the milk getting spoilt.
The pump can be carried anywhere quite comfortably and can be used anywhere with an AC adaptor, or a car adaptor (buy one, it will help you later on) or AA batteries. (Read review of Medela 9 Volt Vehicle Breast Pump Lighter Adaptor)
The performance didn't vary a great deal in any of the options which is a huge advantage.
If portability is your main criteria then any variant of this pump should be your #1 candidate. There is not compromise in either functionality or style in PISA.
Medela is a master of pumps with bags and still leads the field by a long way.
4. Comfort: I had no issues with the Medela PISA Pump.
Initially I felt little sore around the nipples but my skin got used to it and didn’t trouble me beyond the second day. You can use Medela Tender Care Lanolin Cream (Read review here) to alleviate the pain.
I have asked my friends and colleagues and they also have the same opinion regarding the comfort factor. All the feedback and testimonials I received on my site also speak highly of the comfort level of the pump.
Pump in style Advanced is a great performer which works for months of heavy usage. I haven't come across any serious issue of mothers complaining about discomfort while using this pump.
PISA is one of the most comfortable breast pump I have come across.
5. Hygiene: Medela PISA is open system pump which means there is a probability of milk getting in to the pumping unit. There is also a risk of milk getting contaminated with outside air. Actual reported cases of such contamination has been very minuscule.
Of course washing and sterilizing all the attachments after every use is necessary and advisable.
Many people find tube condensation in the tubing an issue and I concur with them but still not a deal-breaker for me. Mothers can properly clean and dry the tubing to minimize the risk of condensation, mold and mildew buildup.
Condensation did't effect the performance or efficiency of the pump though. I will suggest mothers to change the tubing which is quite cheap at regular interval. If condensation is a big concern for you then you can buy replacement tubing which is available at very reasonable prices.
6. Sound: Medela In Style Breast Pump makes relatively less sound than other competing electric breast pumps models.
It has to be understood that a powerful motor is working underneath and it will make noise. Medela PISA's noise is not that much to interrupt your baby's sleep or colleagues in your office.
I used to pump even early in the morning without disturbing my husband or LO.
Only exception is the Spectra S1 which works quietly with minimal fuss. I read many reviewers say that Medela is loud for them.
7. Accessories & Spare parts: Since it is such a popular pump, there is no dearth of accessories or spare parts. There is a whole ecosystem developed around the Medela pumps which means that there are many manufacturers of replacements and accessories which are just as durable and efficient as the original ones.
The prices of spare parts and accessories are also affordable in comparison to other brands. I strongly suggest also buying Medela Accessory set for more convenience.
8. Best for Exclusive Pumpers : Medela PISA is durable and works hard. I was an exclusive pumper and used it 3-4 times a day without any glitch. For exclusive pumpers, PISA is the right choice.
9. Price: The price makes this a deal which is very hard to refuse. There is a discount in Amazon which is probably the only place where you can get such cheap Medela Pump in style Advanced pump.
At this price point and with all these features and accessories, Medela In Style Advanced Breast Pump is the ONLY CHOICE if you’re looking for a double electric breast pump for yourself.
I am a housewife and take care of my 2 children. Since I am busy, I bought Medela Pump In Style advanced Backpack since I liked the look of it and found it very convenient. I am huge fan of Medela Pump In Style as I can pump more milk per session as compared to my old manual breast pump. Contrary to my initial suspicions, the pump is easy to use and totally comfortable. This is the best decision I have ever made.
I bought this pump immediately after my delivery. Before anyone starts condemning me, I would like to tell everyone that my baby had a very strong latch which caused immense pain in my nipples especially my left one. It became a constant struggle for both the baby and me. I began using it almost 2 weeks after the childbirth. Using Medela Pump Instyle Advanced on the go tote helped me in saving my nipples and allowed my LO to have my milk. I have been going to work since last 2 months and the pump has again saved me a lot of trouble. It pumps so much milk that my baby is never out of milk. The pump is super easy to use and i can't stop recommending it. I use it 3-4 times a day (even while in office). I expected it to b e noisy but believe me its very quiet. The bag is big and stores quite a lot of stuff in there. The accessories are also cheap and easy to find (I buy from amazon).
I had to go to work after 4 months and Medela Pump In Style helped me take care of my son even when I was out. Without it I dont think I would have been able to give my LO the breast milk he deserved!
I hate machines and used to dread breast pumps. But Medela pump instyle is so EASY. Don't let anyone tell you anything else. Buy it and see it for yourself. The parts and attachments may confuse you a bit at first but then everything starts making sense. With tote option, everything is so easy. All the accessories made the pump value for money!
If i have 1 regret it's that why I didnt go for PISA for my first baby. My life could have been so much smoother and stress free. it seems that this pump has been made by a mother! A nursing mom has many challenges and the engineers at Medela have thought of every aspect to make pumping a comfortable or rather an enjoyable chore. I had to pump at least 3 times and I was never stressed out. With help of a pumping bra the pumping was even more smooth. I can't think of any other pumping machine now.

Hi, I am Marissa. I am a wife of a very supportive husband and mother 3 precious kids. Even though my life is not picture perfect, I have too many blessings to be counted. I am an ordinary mom who has been through some tough times.
I have tried to collate the best information available and write personal & real reviews for the benefits of parents who are confused with the plethora of breast pumps available. I have made an effort to steer clear of technical jargons and used layman language which is understood by people like us.
